AirBnB – Short Term Stay Refugee Program

  • Free short-term stays donated to 20,000 Afghan refugees
  • Current goal is to host 100,000 Ukrainian Refugees
  • Arrangements made through 3rd party non profit organization, rather than AirBnB directly.
  • Search their web site for the AirBnB in your community to check on their program participation.

Airfare Programs

  • Miles4Migrants Donation Program
    • Charity created in 2016, provides free air travel to refugees & migrants; Ukraine is currently first appeal on web site home page.
    • ‘Donate your travel miles’ from Home Page lets you donate your unused travel miles (or credit card program credts), through a simple form. Note Disclaimer: Miles4Migrants discloses at the start of the donation procedure that your miles may go to Ukrainians, or it may go to others in urgent need as deemed appropriate by M4Ms partners on the ground.
    • ‘Apply for free Air Travel’ – also from the Home page, an even simpler form for a Ukrainian refugee in one of the border countries around Ukraine, to be placed on the waiting list for air travel from a border country.  Decided on a case-by-case basis by M4Ms     partners on the ground in those border countries.
  • United Airline Mile Matching program
    • United will match 1st 5 Million miles donated in support of Air LInks, Red Cross, World Central Kitchen & more.

    • ‘Suiting’ - provides interview business wear for women re-entering workplace.
    • Provides women’s office wear & other services for successful job seekers.
    • Conveniently located in Sunny Side Mall, Bedford Highway
    • REFERRALS only from Immigration, Job Search programs etc.
  • Thrift Shops - WUNS & The Shoreline Journal are offering recognition & promotion to Thrift Shops who host a free, private shopping trip for refugees. Contact your local shops to inquire about interest.  We are building a list of possible participants community by community and contacting them over time. NB for shops that sell toys we are asking the perhaps 'de-militarize' them a bit before hand if possible.

Child Care Day Homes - pdf

  • NS allows for up to six (6) children (not including those resident in the home), for unlicensed child care in that home.
  • Consult with Host families about the possibility of Ukrainian language child care in their homes?
  • Staffed by volunteer Ukrainians?
  • Good WIFI is essential

CUAET – Canadian Ukrainian Authorization for Emergency Travel

  • Federal program allows expedited Visas
  • allows refugees to begin work immediately, waiving normal 30 day waiting period.
  • expedites applications and waives application fees for University students.

- Paperwork Points - downloadable Google Document with extensive info AND links for Paperwork - from Bank Accounts to YMCA visits - please note as of July, a valid Ukrainian Driver's License will be accepted as equivalent to a Nova Scotia Driver's License.

Donations - The Halifax Ukrainian Store is located in the Bayers Road Shopping Centre near the 102 Highway Exit. this is a distribution Hub for furniture, kitchen wares, tools, educational books & games but NO TOYS. As of July 11, they are unable to accept any more donations or donation appointments, ONLY appointments, through their web site for Ukrainian shoppers to pick up their free items.  but you can use their Facebook Page for now to post items you would like to give to a Ukrainian in Nova Scotia; must include ONE photo and your community so shoppers can PM you if interested.

Driver’s License

  • Ukrainian License is now accepted in Nova Scotia as 'equivalent' to a NS driver's license.
  • Ukrainian License is good for 90 days
  • Immigrant should then apply for IDP, International Drivers Permit

Employment – in additional to Municipal Job Search Centres

  • - Federal online job bank created in conjunction with CUAET.
    • Ukrainian Job Seekers can open free account to register for employment and browse Job Bank postings.
    • Employers can open account to post Job Openings for multiple employers interested in hiring Ukrainian refugees.

Food Assistance (in addition to food banks) – many listed on Google Places with map balloons.

Coin Star Coin Counters machines

  • Coin Star counting machines located at Nova Scotia Sobey’s & Superstores outlets.
  • Superstore locations are listed on Coin Star online map.
  • Self-operated machines count coins, subtract 12% fee and print voucher.
  • Grocery Express Cashier scans voucher and gives you cash.
  • Easy touch screen operation – sanitizer should be provided by machines.
  • Community groups can track results of their fundraising campaign by using their group email address.

  • Brought two Syrian families to East Hants
  • Recently fundraised over $50,000 for Ukrianian refugees
  • Assisting current EH Hosts & publicizing new Host homes.
  • NOTE: HEARTS does not assist with airfares.

  • Little Free Libraries - maintained by neighbours, leave & borrow books at any time, searchable map.

Medical – Medical Diagnoses Tests (MDTs) – Halifax doctor offers free services.

Municipal Programs & NGO's - East Hants is used as a sample Municipality - these resources are located at an old brick shcool house, now The Nova Centre, #224 on Hiwy 214 in Elmsdale.

  • East Hants Family Resource Centre - programs & activities, curbside pickup of kids clothing & snacks, Baby Time at St. Bernards in Enfield, Wednesdays in the Park playtime at Shubenacadie Elementary School etc.
  • Elmsdale Community Garden - 24/7 self-harvest garden & green houses, curbside pickup of Community Freezer Meals, summer & fall pop-up markets for free vegetables, snacks and school supplies, free community meals in summer, plus free take-out meals & meal delivery program in winter.
  • East Hants Community Learning & Rider - non-profit adult education classes and "Roada Rider" - affordable, accessible community transit for shopping trips, doctors appointments etc.

Transitional Funds Program - The Federal Government of Canada will give a one-time payment of $3,000 to Refugees settling in Canada, as a Direct Deposit into their new bank account, and a one-time payment of $1,500 for a minor child, as a direct deposit into the new bank account of a parent or legal guardian of the minor child, also resident here.  These funds are intended as financial assistance in getting settled in their new province.

  • Centre provides services and programs to immigrant families of all ages. WUNS is reviewing info. 
  • They also have a kiosk at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport and have been recruiting Ukrainian speakers to staff it.
